This is the decade of sex, drugs and rock n’ roll.

But was it the dawn of a golden age which created a more democratic and classless society?

Or did it set in motion the seeds of a yob culture without morals or values?

This series examines the real legacy of the swinging sixties?

At the beginning of the Sixties, Britain was run by a patrician Conservative government; at the end of the sixties a grammar school educated, Labour MP from Liverpool was the Prime Minister. At the beginning of the sixties, most popular music came from America; at the end of the Sixties, Britain led the world not just in music, but in other aspects of popular culture.

The sixties were the democratic decade – as never before people could do want they wanted: the contraceptive pill freed sex from the tyranny of the fear of pregnancy; homosexuality was made legal, censorship of the theatre ended; the consumer society boomed, most people had more money in their pockets and they spent it; the first cheap airlines opened up foreign travel and during the decade more than half of Britain became home owners.

The series is chronological with each programme following aspects of the Beatles career as a way to chart the historical, cultural and social revolution. We place events in the context of their origins in the 50’s and explore the ways this decade set the scene for the 21st Century.
